In 1862 Sayid Abu-Bakr Effendi (1814-1880) from Erzurum, Turkey, was sent to the Cape of Good Hope by Sultan Abdulaziz to resolve religious conflicts among Muslim groups. He lived in Woodstock, Cape Town, until his death.

Photo-journalist and radio presenter Shafiq Morton, recipient of two Vodacom awards, received the 2012 AWQAF award for his contribution to community media. His books include From the Spice Islands to Cape Town - the life and times of Tuan Guru and Imtiaz Sooliman and the Gift of the Givers, a mercy to all.
